The three days of the PAU 2023 exams in Catalonia start with a record number of students

The advance to this week of the selectivity, which was usually held in mid-June, will allow students to take the coca de Sant Joan and dance in the festival knowing their admission grade. They will not know if they have entered the chosen degree (for that they will have to wait until July 12), but they will know the qualification of the exams that today, tomorrow and the day after are held throughout Catalonia. And, from there, see if they will be able to enter with last year's cutoff notes.

The public universities that are the headquarters of the two hundred courts that organize the entrance exams to the university (PAU) were yesterday already prepared to receive this morning the 41,671 students who have requested to take them, a thousand more than last year. This constitutes a record in the history of these evaluations (also known as EVAU).

"The tests are similar to those of the latest editions and are approved by 97% of those who take part", wanted to reassure the general secretary of the Consell Interuniversitari de Catalunya (CIC), Laura Roman, at the presentation of the same last week .

The uncertain ones are those of next year, in June 2024, which must respond to the Lomloe CVs, but the decree that must define the new model has been suspended by the Spanish Government until after the general elections. Its wording will depend on the elected government, but it must be linked to what the first-year high school students have already studied this year. "Whether they are, they are not going to be asked anything that they have not given in class," said sources from the CIC, the body in charge of preparing the content of the tests and organizing the courts.

For the moment, those that start today follow the form of recent years: a mandatory general phase for those who come from high school, with five subjects, and another specific and voluntary phase in which they can take up to three subjects, although they will only be told two for the note.

They will break your nerves first thing in the morning with Spanish language and literature. Beforehand, they will indicate on a page that they will give the members of the panel the language in which they want to read the statements (Catalan or Spanish, and Aranese in history) in each of the exams (except in the language exams, which are not eligible). At 12 noon they will continue with a foreign language. The afternoons of the three days are reserved for electives.

On Thursday the students will face history and continue with the matter of their modality (artistic drawing, Latin or mathematics). On the last day, Friday June 9, they will have Catalan language and literature. The duration of the exams will be one and a half hours for all subjects, and will be extended to 2 hours in the courts for students with specific educational support needs.

For high school students (32,698) the general phase is compulsory, which is not the case for students coming from higher education training cycles (4,191) who only take optional subjects to raise their grade. This is the group that has increased the most compared to the previous year, with almost 10% more applications, which reinforces the year-on-year trend of the transition from vocational training to university. A third minority group, that of free enrollment, amounts to 4,742, with a slight increase compared to 2022.

The final marks will reflect the qualification of the general phase (from 1 to 10) and the optional one, which corresponds to a maximum of two subjects of the three that can be presented (valid for two more years).

The university access mark qualifies up to 10 and is the result of the baccalaureate evaluation (60%) and the general phase mark (40% if the mark is equal to or greater than 4). But it can reach 14 if the weighted value of two optional subjects is added.

The pre-registration process for university degrees began yesterday, June 6, and will end on the 30th of this month. The places will be assigned to the highest marks and the cut-off mark will be established, the mark of the last student with a place, on July 12.
