The surprise of the sucking butterfly

I have been able to photograph for Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia in Casserres, in Berguedà, this zebra butterfly or zebra queen (Iphiclides feisthamelii), which is one of the largest in Europe and, in recent years, has become a rare species in some Central European countries (it is protected by law in some).

This butterfly is known as the sucker. It is found distributed mainly in Spain, Portugal, the south of France, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

As can be seen in the photographs, it is an easily recognizable species, since the name of the zebra butterfly is due to the coloration of the wings, in which several black stripes stand out on a white background.

The larger females lay clutches of one or two eggs. It has two or three generations per year, from spring to late summer or into autumn.

If you want to see it, it is better to look for it in the pine forests and holm oaks, their usual habitats. It is also more likely that we can observe it on abandoned agricultural land.
