The secret message of the Laberint d'Horta, revealed

The ambitious creative dream of Joan Anton Desvalls i d'Ardena (1740-1820) managed to come true, despite its excessive physical extension. The Laberint d'Horta remained almost hidden by a distance that even today stands as an obstacle, although a minor one. Only a privileged few could have access to such a wonder as long as it was kept private.

It was in 1968 when it was successfully negotiated to become municipal property. Despite this, a distance is maintained, not physical, but cultural. And this formidable neoclassical garden, despite appearing understandable, hides a deep, rich message. The unaware visitor will be satisfied to discover sculptures, the labyrinth game, buildings and so on; perhaps this level of aesthetic understanding, although superficial, will be enough for you and will fill your senses.

The broad message will however remain hidden. A dense and deep content is displayed through allegories and symbols that enrich it.

An essential book has just been published to enter another labyrinth, the intellectual one, which reveals an endless number of keys: El Laberint d'Horta, by Manuel Cuevas (SD·Edicions).

Surprises overflow the pages as the lavish complex of cryptic messages is revealed with crystal clear clarity. I confess that until now I only knew the brief text by Professor Federico Revilla: The amatory key in the Labyrinth of Barcelona (University of Valladolid).

In summary, the overwhelming information displayed throughout the work by the author will allow the visitor the opportunity to enter the intense web of content and experience the enjoyment of a world overflowing with mythology, eroticism and culture.

But there is more, such as of course the necessary biography of such a cultivated, sensitive and creative Marquis of Llupià. He adds extensive professional and human information about the hitherto unknown Domenico A. Bagutti, an architect who contributed his professionalism and extensive knowledge. And even a touch about other famous dream gardens: Boboli, Bomarzo and Villa d'Este.

Spectacular is the photographic beauty displayed by Maria Casas: it takes us into such an enveloping and attractive landscape, especially by offering exciting details.
