The return of 'Grand Prix', the television formats that refuse to die

With so much content on offer to watch on a small screen, recovering a well-known brand allows, at least on the day of return, that a large part of the audience does not want to miss it. Out of nostalgia, interest or curiosity. Afterwards, its continuity will depend on multiple factors and success is not guaranteed. High Tension, The Price Is Right or Child's Play, for example, recently returned and were not very successful. Despite this, in 2023, the return of well-known and successful formats of the past is being prepared for a new stage, either on traditional television or on streaming platforms.

Grand Prize / The 1

It is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated returns due to its impact when it was broadcast on La 1 between 1995 and 2005. Ramón García was the presenter of the emblematic family contest during its eleven seasons on TVE and will also be so again 18 years later accompanied this time by two co-presenters: the streamer Cristina López, better known as Cristinini, and the actress Michelle Calvó. The program, whose premiere has been announced for this summer, will continue to have two towns in Spain facing each other in each edition, ready to have fun and involve all the families in their homes. Some of its most charismatic tests will be recovered, although RTVE has already advanced that this stage will not have the iconic heifer.

There you! / Telecinco

Jesus Vázquez will also lead a program he presented years ago: ¡Allá tú! . The first stage of the “box contest” was broadcast on Telecinco between 2004 and 2008 and the second on Cuatro in 2011. The participants meet on a set where each one holds a box. The chosen one is choosing and opening the boxes of his companions to know the prizes to which he will no longer be able to choose until he is left with only one box, whose prize is the one he wins. Adaptation of the Deal or not deal format, the recent reissues that have been made in countries such as France and Italy and the one currently being prepared by the United Kingdom, support the validity of the program.

Password / Atresmedia

Another contest that is preparing its return to television is Password, which Cuatro broadcast between 2008 and 2010. Now it is jumping from Mediaset to Atresmedia, a group that has not yet decided whether it will broadcast the format on Antena 3 or La Sexta. The new stage of the contest, whose recordings have already begun, will be presented by Cristina Pedroche, replacing Luján Argüelles, who was her host on Cuatro. Premiered in the sixties on American television, the contest has had several stages over the years. One of the last was in April 2022, when it was recovered by the NBC network in the United States by Jimmy Fallon to have a new version again.

Takeshi's Castle / Prime Video

The Amazon Prime Video platform recovers the historic Japanese format Takeshi's Castle, which was renamed Yellow Humor on Telecinco and became a phenomenon between 1990 and 1995, especially for children and young people. In 2006, the contest returned for a brief season on Cuatro. The original Japanese series showed how 100 contestants tried to bring down the impenetrable Takeshi Castle by facing numerous outdoor tests such as crossing a pond made of springboards, going through a maze full of enemies or surviving a suspension bridge while being attacked by balls. The eight episodes of the Spanish version will premiere on July 10 and will arrive with the voices of Jorge Ponce, Eva Soriano and Dani Rovira.

Next autumn will also see the return of two incombustible formats despite the obstacles they have had to overcome: Operación Triunfo and GH VIP. Mediaset announced on Thursday that it is preparing a new edition of the reality show with an outstanding novelty: Marta Flich will be the host of the show, replacing Jorge Javier Vázquez. Guadalix de la Sierra's house will reopen its doors after, after the controversy over the sexual abuse of Carlota Prado, Mediaset decided to give the format a break in December 2019.

Also in autumn, Operación Triunfo will return, which will live a new stage on the Amazon Prime Video platform after its last goodbye in June 2020, the edition affected by the pandemic. After eleven seasons broadcast in two stages on RTVE and one on Telecinco, the next edition will be presented by Chenoa and will feature weekly 90-minute galas, daily programs with current events from the academy and 24-hour programming on YouTube. In addition to Chenoa, 'triumph' of the first edition, Noemí Galera and Manu Guix will resume their roles as director of the Academy and musical director, respectively
