The project to improve irrigation in Baix Ter

The Colomers dam is one of those interesting places to discover. And in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we wanted to get closer to show images of this project to improve irrigation in the Baix Ter which, in the end, has proven to be more effective as a route for cycling.

The dam was built in 1971 to replace the traditional locks in the lower course of the Ter (Ullà, Canet and Colomers locks) and to increase, with the new construction of two channels, the irrigated area of the lower Ter, according to details the Ter Consortium.

However, and the time since the construction of the dam (1971), this project "has been stagnant and paralyzed." In 2002, "the ACA studied using the dam as a regulating pond for the waters of Ter".

It is a dam built with large concrete blocks, with eight pillars and six large gates, which is about 103 m long, about six meters high above the river level and about twenty meters deep.

In 2003, a footbridge was built at the back for the passage of cycle tourists, within a Baix Ter route organized by the Baix Empordà County Council.

Although it is not used, both the dam and the surroundings, where there are ACA offices, are conditioned and cared for, although, as can be seen, it has also been a place conquered by graffiti artists.
