The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the security forces stormed the embassy last Friday in order to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who was taking refuge there after obtaining asylum from Mexico following his conviction. of Ecuador for corruption.
The American states have reiterated "the obligation of States to fully respect" the provisions of the 1954 Diplomatic Asylum Convention, which establishes the inviolability of diplomatic missions. Likewise, they have called on Ecuador and Mexico to "initiate a dialogue and take immediate action to resolve this serious matter in a constructive manner.”
During the meeting, images from the security cameras of the Mexican embassy were shown showing how the police pointed guns and subdued the embassy manager, Roberto Canseco, to the ground while Glas was being detained.
In their interventions, the delegations from Brazil, Colombia and Haiti demanded that Quito hand over the Ecuadorian politician to Mexico, which has granted him asylum. For his part, the representative of Bolivia has accused Ecuador of violating its own constitution, which in article 41 recognizes "the rights of asylum and refuge, in accordance with the law and international Human Rights instruments."
The US ambassador to the OAS, Francisco Mora, has highlighted the Joe Biden administration's rejection of the use of force in Quito and demanded that Mexico and Ecuador resolve the diplomatic crisis, which would benefit both. because they are "strategic partners."
This Wednesday's meeting was preceded by another called by Ecuador, which alleges that Mexico violated international treaties on asylum by granting it to a former vice president who is facing prison sentences and who is on conditional release.
