The Climate Change Summit faces its final stretch with still many unknowns to clear up. It has not yet been resolved how the almost 200 countries present at COP28, which will be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, will address the thorny issue of fossil fuels, the main source of emissions that contribute to climate warming.

At least 80 countries demand an agreement to end its use. Controversial COP28 president Sultan Al Yaber on Friday urged countries to step out of their comfort zones and work together to reach a deal before the two-week summit ends.

"Please, let's do this work," he said, opening a plenary session as the summit entered its toughest phase of negotiations. "I need you to step forward and get out of your comfort zone," he added. With five days left before the end of the conference, scheduled for December 12, the countries' ministers will join the deliberations on Friday.

Never before, in three decades of UN climate summits, have the future role of fossil fuels been addressed head-on.

These are some of the most striking images so far from COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
