The mayors of the Barcelona coast demand urgent action

The intense garbinada that has hit the Catalan coast these days has especially impacted the northern section of Barcelona, where it has caused differences in height of up to two meters in height on the seafront. In Badalona, services have been removed and walking areas damaged on the beaches of Coco and Pont del Petroli, as well as Barca Maria, which had already lost the entire volume of sand in previous episodes. The storm has also taken away between 15 and 30% of the sand from Barcelona's beaches and the mayor, Jaume Collboni, announced yesterday that he will ask the central government for help to replace it.

The mayor, Xavier Garcia Albiol, demanded an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Ecological Transition to provide definitive solutions to the regeneration of the beaches before the summer season. The same has happened on the Montgat coast, where the City Council had already been forced to reconsider the suppression of the bathing season and not install the usual services due to the lack of sand, also pending a regeneration project that has not materialized. . In Mataró, the most affected beach has been Callao, which has practically disappeared.

Further north, in Arenys de Mar, the nudist beach of Musclera has been erased from the map and the accesses have had to be sealed. Another of the affected beaches, Cavaió, north of the port dike, has lost all the sand, even barefooting the base of the Portinyol restaurant, which to guarantee stability has built a dike made up of fiber bags filled with sand. On the promenade that connects the coastal town with Canet de Mar, the waves have caused several palm trees to fall in a space that until a few days ago was at a distance of almost 50 meters from the sea.

In Pineda de Mar, the Pescadors beach, the breakwater that protected it has been exposed, something that has not happened since 2006. One of the engine huts for dragging boats has been destroyed and the boat platform has completely disappeared. , making it necessary to close access due to the imminent danger of collapse. In this city, the mayor, Xavier Amor, has acknowledged that the Government delegate, Carlos Prieto, has contacted him to find out the extent of the storm damage and thus begin repair projects from the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
