The mayor of Bermeo resigns a day later after suffering an accident due to being drunk

The recently elected mayor of Bermeo (Vizcaya) by EH Bildu, Asier Larrauri, has resigned this Sunday from his position after having suffered an accident with his car this morning when he was driving under the influence of alcohol, from which he emerged unharmed.

Larrauri left the road at Alto de Sollube around 3:50 a.m., when he was driving his vehicle on the BI631, which connects Mungia with Bermeo via Alto de Sollube. In the accident, only the vehicle he was driving suffered damage, sources from the Basque Department of Security have reported. Larrauri himself has acknowledged that in the alcohol test that was carried out after the accident he has shown a rate "higher than that indicated by the Law" that some media place at 0.68 milligrams, triple what is allowed.

This afternoon, EH Bildu has published on his social networks the letter that the mayor has sent to the Biscayan leadership of the formation, in which he requests that his resignation be accepted "so as not to tarnish the image of the people of Bermeo or damage the good name of the party I represent". Larrauri affirms in his letter that "I have always believed that public officials should have exemplary behavior and, when that does not happen, that they should step aside."

He also apologizes to the people from Bermeo who placed their trust in EH Bildu and in his person for not having known how to have the exemplary behavior required by the responsibility they gave me. Asier Larrauri was elected at noon yesterday as the new mayor of Bermeo with the support of the four councilors of the Guzan Independent citizen platform and the five of EH Bildu, seizing the mayoralty from the PNV (which obtained 8 councilors on 28M) that has occupied it for the last four years.

The management of EH Bildu de Bizkaia has accepted Larrauri's resignation, so in the coming days it will proceed to designate his replacement.
