The Mataró Hospital, a pioneer in vaginal laparoscopy

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the Mataró Hospital (Maresme) began this type of intervention, vaginal laparoscopy, a year ago, and it is one of the few Catalan centers where it is performed. This is the V-Notes technique (Vaginal Nature Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery).

It is a method that combines vaginal surgery with laparoscopic surgery, making it less invasive, and which allows patients to have no visible scars, since no cut is made in the abdomen and the only incisions made are inside from the vagina. The main benefits are a faster postoperative recovery with less pain, and a reduction in possible complications such as infections and adhesions.

Pau Carabias, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service, stresses that it is a technique that "has revolutionized gynecological surgery, since it allows an intervention such as hysterectomy, which involves the removal of the uterus and which is one of the gynecological interventions more frequent, it can become an outpatient surgery”. In addition, he adds that "it is a technique that gives professionals a better view of the tissues and better control and precision, avoiding injuries to organs near the uterus and less bleeding in the patient."

In the last year, 22 surgeries of this type have been performed at the Hospital de Mataró and the most common indications are uterine fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, ovarian cysts or initial gynecological cancer. Laparoscopic vaginal surgery requires a series of special skills and techniques, and gynecologists must be specifically trained to perform this type of intervention.

In May, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the Mataró Hospital organized a course on "Advanced Laparoscopic Gynecological Surgery" where a theoretical session was combined with practical training in the operating room with the performance of two vaginal laparoscopic hysterectomies. Among others, gynecologists from the Hospital de Calella and the Hospital de Viladecans attended.
