The hermitage viewpoint of flowering fruit trees

Today I will talk to you in The Readers' Photos of La Vanguardia about the hermitage that in the month of March becomes a busy viewpoint of the spectacle of the fruit trees of the Segrià fields.

At this time of year - and from the small esplanade attached to the sanctuary of Sant Joan de Carratalà - myriads of curious people, hikers and tourists come there, on foot or by car.

Its objective is none other than to be able to contemplate from this vantage point the wonderful and polychrome show of flowering in the fruit fields of Aitona, Seròs or Alcarràs, among others.

It is no wonder because, from this elevation of the hermitage of Sant Joan de Carratalà, the landscape is magnificent, as can be seen in this series of photographs.

This small sanctuary dates back to the 13th century and is in Romanesque style. It was built by the order of the Hospitallers and, supposedly, on an ancient mosque. It consists of a single nave covered with a barrel vault reinforced by two main arches. The apse is semicircular. On the south side there is a small rectangular chapel.

Now it is a great viewpoint of flowering fruit trees, but, in the past, it was a strategic point, since a good part of the Baix Segre was controlled from the top of the hill.
