CC.OO. has presented to the Pamplona City Council a request in which it requests the removal of a sculpture that, according to them, violates the current regulations on equality. It is located on the corner of Pío XII and Vuelta del Castillo, and is titled Monument to the Family. According to the plaintiffs, it represents a marriage with three children, and the problem lies in the fact that the male figure is its axis. They allege that it makes invisible the diversity of families in Pamplona. “The characterization of the people who make up the family symbolized in that sculpture conveys the preeminence and superiority of the man, who is twice the size of the woman, is above her and surrounds her with his arms.”
What surprises me most is that the Navarrese press explains that it is an abstract sculpture: “A sculptural group worked in an abstract way.” The city's Urban Sculpture Guide says the same thing: “Sculptural ensemble, worked in an abstract way.”
Let's see, if it really were an abstract sculpture, they wouldn't have been able to infer that it represents a couple with three children. Abstract are the works of Kandinsky, Mondrian or Malevich, where it is impossible to detect whether they represent a sunset in the Antilles or a baked sea bass. Precisely because they are abstract they do not represent anything.
On the other hand, the Pamplona monument represents, and that is why CC.OO. has asked for it to be removed. I only see one possibility to save it. Let the author, the Dutch resident of Pamplona Henriette Boutens, explain that the figure that unionists consider the father is actually the mother, in the process of transformation, and that the one they believe to be the mother is in fact a trans man. For the moment, we leave the children as they are until they go to school and we explain to them how to choose the gender with which they feel best. With this argument, those of CC.OO. They will forcefully silence their mouths.
