The Electoral Board declares the Junts candidate ineligible for the mayor's office of Argentona

The Mataró (Maresme) Zone Electoral Board (JEZ) has declared ineligible the JxCat candidate for mayor of Argentona (Barcelona), Eudald Calvo, who last November was sentenced to six months of disqualification for his role in the 1- Or, when he was mayor of the municipality under the initials of the CUP. According to the sentence handed down in November by a Mataró court, his active participation as mayor on October 1, 2017 was considered proven, both in the logistics of the referendum and in preventing the Local Police from removing propaganda from 1-O .

Calvo was mayor of Argentona under the acronym of the CUP and the unitary candidacy Unitat Argentona per la República between 2015 and 2020, until he resigned after a case of sexual abuse of a friend of his sentimental partner at the time surfaced, facts that did not They were denounced in court but Calvo himself acknowledged and apologized, admitting "improper attitudes."

After his abrupt end as a CUP position, Calvo signed for JxCat and, in June 2022, he was proclaimed candidate of this formation for mayor of Argentona, but last November's conviction "disabled him to run" in the municipal elections. on May 28, according to the resolution of the Mataró Zone Electoral Board.

In mid-May the disqualification ended and the appeal presented to the sentence has not been resolved, but the JEZ has applied article 6.2 of the LOREG in which the existence of a sentence against the administration, as is the case of disobedience, although is not firm, disqualifies the candidate.

From JxCat in the Maresme they announce that they will appeal the decision of the JEZ and for the moment everything indicates that it will be the next in the candidacy, Montse Cervantes, current councilor in the Argentona City Council for the Units coalition, who will occupy the place of Bald. The appeal must be resolved within 48 hours and the electoral lists will cease to be provisional on May 2, "so we have some room for maneuver," says Carles Bosch, president of JxCat in Maresme.

From Junts in the Maresme they declare themselves very upset with the decision of the JEZ. "They disqualify him for making himself available to the will of the citizenry," criticizes Bosch. "It is unfortunate that from a judicial office it can be decided not to be a representative of popular sovereignty" adds the president who sends a clear message to the citizens of Argentona: "I hope they agree with us at the polls and that they rebel against the decision judicial".

"An unacceptable decision, a new case of repression. One more example of how the polls are fought from the robes," the general secretary of JxCat, Jordi Turull, has denounced on Twitter, who promises to "battle with all the legal resources" that are available. in their hands, taking into account that against this resolution it is possible to file a written appeal before the Provincial Board of Barcelona.

It so happens that Junts also negotiated with Eudald Calvo's brother, Bernat, to be part of the candidacy, but as La Vanguardia has learned, a series of disagreements regarding the place on the list, led to the lack of agreement and that Bernat Calvo is the candidate of the Ara Argentona formation.
