The economist Francesc Granell has died this Tuesday at the Trueta hospital in Girona at the age of 78 after suffering an accident on a Catalan beach last weekend, according to sources close to the family.
Granell, professor of applied economics at the University of Barcelona and a regular contributor to La Vanguardia (he did not miss his appointment with the newspaper last Friday), was a benchmark among Spanish economists.
Among the numerous recognitions to his career are admission to the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences, the Order of Civil Merit, the Creu de Sant Jordi or the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X el Sabio.
In his professional career, he held positions of responsibility in different European and United Nations organizations.
