The days in the almond sun

In the small and beautiful town of Savallà del Comtat (Conca de Barberà) many almond trees are grown and I could still see the traditional way of drying the almonds in the sun, as seen in these photographs in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

Everything follows a process. Once the almonds are collected, they are dehulled and spread, since it is very possible that they have a humidity percentage above 12-15% depending on the time of collection.

In fact, we can know it (or intuit it), since if the almond has been on the tree for a long time, the humidity percentage will be lower.

Normally, two days in the dryer is enough for the almond, but it depends on the ambient temperature and the place where it is spread, since it is not the same in a warehouse as in the open air.

The basic economic activity of Savallà del Comtat is agriculture, almost all of it dedicated to dry land. The main crops are cereals, especially wheat and barley. There is also a small sector of vineyard and irrigation is reduced to some orchards for self-consumption located on the left side of the Corb River.

Part of the population works in the industries of Santa Coloma de Queralt and takes care of the land on weekends. Regarding livestock, it is worth mentioning pigs and sheep.
