The curious ovens of Sant Llorenç del Munt

In The Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia we can see in detail what a lime kiln is like, a curious work but which, in the past, was very necessary for construction in the Vallès area.

At present, due to cement and concrete, these ovens are in disuse. They were built in forests, with stone and milk to transform it into lime, as in this case, in Matadepera (Vallès Occidental).

The Lime Kiln in Ton, in Pla dels Caçadors, is part of an industrial complex together with the lime kilns in Corcola and Camí d'en Girabau, probably dating from the middle of the 19th century.

At that time there was a great demand for lime due to the strong growth of the neighboring cities of Sabadell and Terrassa thanks to industrialization.

The presence of a quarry, a network of roads and a vineyard shed in the vicinity show an exploitation linked in its origins to the rural world.

The oven was normally made taking advantage of the relief of the terrain, digging into the ground and building the front, the door or later growing it if necessary.

It was also often lined on the inside with stone to consolidate the structure and prevent heat loss. Sometimes it overflowed.
