The butane cylinder becomes 5% more expensive after a year of falling price

The traditional butane cylinder will cost 5% more starting tomorrow, up to 15.14 euros, below the historical maximum of 19.55 euros reached in May 2022. This is the first review of its price after six two months consecutive descents. Its increase in price is mainly due to the increase in the price of raw materials (8.3%), the sharp increase in freight prices (26.6%) and the depreciation of the euro against the dollar (-3.3% ).

The upward or downward revision of the butane cylinder is limited to 5%, with the excess or defect in price being accumulated for application in subsequent revisions. The maximum sales price of bottled liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) in containers of between 8 and 20 kilograms is not liberalized and its value is reviewed bimonthly on the third Tuesday of each month.

Bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly composed of butane, that serves as an alternative to natural gas for energy consumption in pressure containers, especially in towns or urban centers without connection to the natural gas network. .

In Spain, 64.5 million LPG containers of different capacities are consumed. It is a fuel in decline, since from 2010 to 2021, total consumption of bottled LPG decreased by more than 25%.

Royal Decree-Law 11/2022, of June 25, limited the maximum price of the 12.5 kilo butane cylinder to 19.55 euros, a measure that Royal Decree-Law 5/2023 extended last June until December 31, 2023.
