Take care now that you can

The two years under the pandemic have not substantially changed the habits of society, beyond the increase in cases of depression and emotional dysfunction that medical services have been detecting for months. Perhaps if we had to highlight a positive change, it could be the general awareness of the need to lead a healthy life. On the one hand, more sport than ever is practiced, and not only by the younger generations, and on the other, attention to good eating habits is more present in our diet. The Ministry of Consumption, which does not have many powers or competencies, has promoted a regulation to reduce the intake of fried products in school canteens and replace them with healthy dietary patterns. To this end, it has released a series of recommendations that we publish today in our Society section.

In Spain, you are very lucky to be able to enjoy a Mediterranean diet. Within our reach we have many local and high-quality products such as vegetables, fruits, legumes or nuts. There should be no excuses to follow a good nutritional education despite the temptations that also appear before our eyes. Scientific advances also allow us to know the impact that certain unhealthy products have on our ecosystem. This is called environmental footprint. An explanation of the consequences of betting on some foods or others is included in the Consumption recommendations.

The cost to our health system of all diseases resulting from poor nutrition should be another good argument for us to be on the right track to control our diet. That is why the initiative of the Ministry of Consumption to curb the intake of fried foods in schools is important. A good nutritional education is necessary from a very young age to avoid acquiring vices that are very difficult to eradicate when reaching adulthood. Health is first. And it's time to take care of ourselves now that we still can. Unfortunately, and in view of these diseases, it must still be stressed that a good diet is no nonsense.
