Spain reaches the highest temperatures of the year: 39 degrees in Huelva

Spain reaches its highest temperatures of the year. For the second time this spring, temperatures soar. The El Granado weather station, in Huelva, recorded this Thursday, at 7:10 p.m., the highest temperature measured so far in Spain this year, with 39 degrees Celsius. It exceeded the 38.7 degrees that were observed on April 27 at the Córdoba airport (and which set the new record for the hottest day in April in Spain since the historical series of temperatures began in that place).

In Morón de la Frontera, 38.2 ºC was reached on Thursday; and in Cabezas de San Juan, also in Seville, 37.9 ºC.

And it is expected that these temperatures can be exceeded over the weekend in the Peninsula, where contrasts in the meteorological situation are expected because there will be intense heat in the southwest of the peninsula (it can reach 40 degrees), combined with tropical nights in the Mediterranean and southern and central areas, and storms in the north with the possibility of hail.

"The weekend will be marked by heat, with maximum temperatures that could be around 38 to 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir valley," explains Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), in statements collected by this diary.

But at the same time storms are expected in the northern half, which "both on Saturday and Sunday could be locally strong and be accompanied by hail," adds Del Campo.

The Aemet spokesman added that this unstable weather, with showers in the north, will continue until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, although "high pressures will probably prevail afterwards and temperatures will tend to rise, with an environment that could be very hot in large areas of the country," he said.

Badajoz, Córdoba and Seville will mark the hottest times this weekend

The Aemet keeps the yellow warnings - risk for outdoor activities - activated for this Saturday due to the intense heat of this meteorological summer in five provinces of the southern peninsula.

Tomorrow it is expected that it will reach 39ºC in the Cordoba countryside and in the Guadalquivir valley in Jaén, while the forecast is that it will reach 38ºC in Las Vegas del Guadiana (Badajoz), the Sevillian countryside and Sierra Morena.

On Saturday, in the north, atmospheric instability will increase (in the triangle formed by the Álava plain, Teruel and the Girona Pyrenees), which will result in more frequent showers and storms in the afternoon and which could be strong locally and be accompanied by hail, especially in and around mountainous environments.

But at the same time, the heat will intensify this Saturday in the eastern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This Saturday will be the hottest day of the week, it will dawn after a tropical night -that is, when the thermometers do not drop below 20 degrees- on the shores of the Mediterranean and inland areas of the southern half and the central peninsular area.

The thermometers will mark 34 or 35 degrees in the Ebro depression, large areas of the center and south of the peninsula, and even points in Mallorca.

In those areas, temperatures on Saturday will be between 5 and 10 degrees above normal for the time of year.

Again, Badajoz, Córdoba and Seville, as well as other towns in the Guadalquivir valley will be around 38 to 40 degrees.

The weather picture will hardly change on Sunday. The precipitations will appear from the early hours in the Cantabrian communities, while they will be more frequent from midday in the rest of the northern half, with the possibility that they will be locally strong in the surroundings of the Cantabrian Mountains and the upper Ebro. They could also occur showers in the mountains of the eastern interior of the peninsula.

The rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands will have calmer weather, with a slight drop in temperatures, except in parts of the southeast, where the drop could be up to six or eight degrees compared to Saturday.

The early morning would be warm again on the shores of the Mediterranean, the southern half and the central peninsular area, and in the afternoon it will exceed 34 degrees in the central depression of the Ebro, large parts of La Mancha, Extremadura and Andalusia.

Córdoba will reach 38 degrees; Ciudad Real, Toledo and Zaragoza will reach 35 degrees, and Madrid will stay at 33.

"Therefore, we will continue talking about heat, perhaps not as intense as in the two previous days, but, of course, a hot environment," Del Campo added.

Monday and Tuesday of next week will be days with similar weather, again marked by the possibility of showers and storms in large areas of the northern and eastern half of the peninsula.

These downpours could occur from early hours in the north, but in general they will be more frequent and general from noon, with the possibility, in addition, that they are locally strong, in mountainous environments and their surroundings.

The temperatures will tend to continue to drop these two days, with an atmosphere more typical of the time of year or even somewhat cooler than usual in inland points.

However, the early mornings will continue to be warm as a result of the abundant cloudiness. "So, we will continue with tropical nights, in which it will not drop below 20 degrees on the shores of the Mediterranean and in points of the southern half and central area," Del Campo stressed.

In the afternoon, on Monday and Tuesday, it will exceed 30 or 32 degrees in areas of the east, center and south of the peninsula, as well as in the Balearic Islands, perhaps not as widely as in the previous days. "Especially in the Balearic Islands, Monday and Tuesday will be very hot days and it could even exceed 35 degrees on the island of Mallorca," said the Aemet spokesman.

As of next Wednesday, the instability will decrease, although that day stormy showers are still expected in the northern half and in points of the eastern interior.

During the following days, the rains will become increasingly limited to the Cantabrian communities and the Pyrenees.

Temperatures will start to rise progressively, with a very warm atmosphere in the southern half, where probably from Thursday or Friday it will already exceed 35 degrees and even 38 in the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys.

In large areas of southern Galicia, the Northern Plateau, the Ebro depression and the interior of the Mediterranean regions it could exceed 32 or 34 degrees.
