Six dead and dozens injured in a multiple accident in Illinois due to a sandstorm

At least six people died this Monday and another 30 were injured in a crash between 40 and 60 vehicles due to a sandstorm in Illinois, United States.

Illinois State Police spokesman Captain Ryan Starrick told the media that between 40 and 60 "passenger vehicles" were involved in several crashes on Interstate 55 and that there are reports of "several deaths."

Starrick added that at least 30 injured have been taken to hospitals.

Among the affected vehicles there are two trucks that were set on fire during this multiple accident, the spokesman said.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said on Twitter that I-55, between Sangamon and Montgomery counties, in that state, was closed in both directions due to "numerous crashes caused by a sandstorm, which has reduced visibility greatly."

The Illinois State Police said in a tweet that traffic on I-55 had been diverted onto a nearby highway and urged drivers to seek alternative routes.
