Since this week, Les Planes d'Hostoles, Besalú, Maià de Montcal, Les Preses, Vall de Bianya, Sant Joan les Fonts and Sant Jaume de Llierca have security cameras at the entrances or exits of the municipality.
These are thirteen license plate readers that will help the Mossos to respond more efficiently when a suspicious car is detected. The initiative, jointly between the towns and the Regional Council of La Garrotxa, has a cost of 164,474 euros that will be paid over five years.
The municipalities will take care of the annual costs of the project, depending on the number of cameras they have. Specifically, Sant Joan les Fonts has three, les Plaines d'Hostoles, Vall de Bianya and les Preses two, while Besalú and Maià de Montcal have one.
The Regional Council highlights that this is a project that will allow “ensure public safety and support police tasks in this area.”
The president of the entity, Santi Reixach, explains that some towns were reluctant to install cameras initially, but that they immediately became favorable. In this sense, Reixach points out that the initiative has a great consensus among the towns and citizens. “It's about preventing people from robbing homes. We need these cameras,” he points out.
The president of the Garrotxa Regional Council also highlights that neighborhood collaboration is “very important” to detect possible thieves entering or leaving the town. And the action of several residents of La Pinya, in the Vall d'en Bas, managed to thwart the robbery of a house by thieves.
