Seven killed in petrol station explosion in northwest Ireland

At least seven people were killed and eight injured in an explosion at a petrol station in Creeslough, County Donegal, north-west Ireland, on Friday, Irish police have confirmed.

The agents indicated last night that there had been three fatalities and now they have added another four, while the rescue work continues among the ruins.

The explosion caused part of the service station and adjacent apartments to collapse, causing a great commotion in the small Irish town of Creeslough, about 50 kilometers from the British territory of Northern Ireland.

The Police and the emergency services continue to travel to the scene, where a security cordon has been established.

In a statement on Twitter, the Applegreen company, which owns the gas station, called the event "devastating."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the deceased, the injured and the Creeslough community," he tweeted.

The "taoiseach" or Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, has expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims and to all the people, on the "darkest day for Donegal and for the whole country".

"The people of this island will share the same sense of shock and utter devastation as the people of Creeslough, at this tragic loss of life," he said.
