Setback for Barça: Dest breaks his crusaders

New setback for FC Barcelona, which could see the sale of Sergiño Dest to PSV Eindhoven frustrated. The American footballer, on loan to the Dutch club since last summer, was having a great season and the Blaugrana club intended to sell him to the Eredivisie club at the end of this season. Now, his serious injury could disrupt the plans.

Dest was injured during training with PSV on April 20 and yesterday confirmed the worst omens: “Unfortunately, I tore my anterior cruciate ligament. I will have surgery soon and I will try to return to my highest level as soon as possible. It will be a difficult moment for me, but I know that these times only make me stronger,” the full-back explained in a video shared through social networks.

At 23 years old, Dest had earned a place in Gregg Berhalter's starting eleven, being a starter in 36 of the 37 games he has played this season, in which he has also scored two goals. His good performance led to a more than necessary sale for the Catalan club.

Now, the operation is complicated with the player out of the game until 2025. The logical thing would be for PSV not to activate the preferential purchase option it had, for 10 million euros, so the player would return to Barcelona this summer. Something that is of no interest either in the sporting plans or in the economic ones, since it needs to release financial fair play to be able to register other players.

Dest's injury will leave him in dry dock for several months, meaning he will miss the Copa América with the United States. A tournament that will be played from June 20 to July 14. With 33 international appearances since 2019, the Dutch-born player started all four games he played with the United States in the last World Cup in Qatar.
