RTVE studies the convenience of releasing 'Supernanny'

After two weeks ago RTVE presented to the media the return of the Supernanny format to Spanish television, its premiere is paralyzed. At the last meeting of the Board of Directors of the public corporation, held on Tuesday, interim president Concepción Cascajosa decided to suspend the promotion of the program for the moment after receiving several letters asking for its cancellation or showing concern about the content.

At that meeting, the president informed the councilors that she had received a letter from the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, and another from the public entity's audience defender, María Escario, showing her concern about the content of Supernanny. The program is one of RTVE's bets for this year and is presented by psychologist Rocío Ramos-Paúl, who "will travel throughout Spain with the aim of supporting families seeking to improve their children's education," a note stated. of the entity.

The contracting of the program did not go through the council because the budget proposed by the Content Directorate was less than two million euros, which is the amount from which this body has to make a decision. Now, after questioning its convenience, Cascajosa has asked the directors to study the pros and cons of its broadcast, after analyzing the documentation that they will be provided, including the content of the two programs on which work had already been done. .

Two weeks ago, Minister Sira Rego requested the suspension of the program “until it is proven that there are no violations of the rights of the girls and boys,” according to her department. “In the vast majority of cases, minors are exposed and used to make a television product. It may also violate their right to personal and family privacy,” they maintain.

The Hearing Ombudsman has also received complaints about the next broadcast of the space. In response to some of these viewers, Escario expressed his “concern about the fact that the exposure of minors in this program in a situation of personal conflict can violate their fundamental rights and stigmatize them in their social environments” and asked RTVE to assess the convenience of its broadcast.

Based on a Ricochet production for Channel 4 and broadcast for the first time in the United Kingdom in 2003, this format has more than 2,000 episodes produced in more than 20 countries. In Spain, Cuatro aired nine seasons between 2006 and 2014, which was also presented by Rocío Ramos-Paúl. Six years ago, the space was canceled in Portugal due to doubts generated by the treatment of minors.
