Rooney resigns after relegation to third at Derby County

Former footballer Wayne Rooney today announced his decision to resign as manager of Derby County, after failing to save the team from relegation to League One (English Third Division).

"I have followed throughout the summer how the club's situation is going with regard to its ownership. I have met with the administrators to inform them of my decision to leave the club. They have tried to convince me otherwise, but my decision was taken," Rooney said in a statement.

Derby County, which was severely penalized last season for its financial problems, are in the process of selling, waiting for someone to buy the club.

"My time here has been a roller coaster of emotions, with highs and lows, but I have to say that I have enjoyed the challenge. I believe that the club should be run by someone with renewed energy and who has not been affected by what It has happened in the last 18 months. I will remember my time at Derby with great affection. I will never forget what I have experienced here, "said the former Manchester United player.

Rooney arrived at Derby County in 2020, as player-manager and eventually took over as manager to save the outfit last season. This campaign's point penalties ended up relegating the 'Rams' to League One.
