Rains, winds and drop in temperatures this Sunday

The entry of a northern component flow that will introduce a relatively cold air mass favored by the change in position of the anticyclone present in the Peninsula will cause a drop in temperatures that will drop this Sunday, April 2. There will also be precipitation in the north and strong winds in the northeast third and the Balearic Islands, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

In general, temperatures will drop, except in the western third of the peninsula, where they will remain with little change, while weak frosts are expected on the northern plateau and in the mountainous systems of the northern half of the peninsula and nearby areas, more intense in the Pyrenees.

Likewise, cloudy or overcast skies are forecast in the eastern Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees, with precipitation, which may be persistent in the eastern end of the Cantabrian Sea, north of Navarra and the Pyrenees, and cloudy intervals in other areas of the northern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, without ruling out some weak precipitation in the rest of the Bay of Biscay, upper Ebro, eastern Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

The skies will be slightly cloudy or clear in the rest of the Peninsula, except for some cloudy intervals at the beginning in the southwest. In the Canary Islands, cloudy intervals in the north of the islands, and slightly cloudy or clear in the south.

Thus, Navarra and Guipúzcoa will be on a yellow alert due to rain, while Navarra and Huesca will also have a yellow alert for snowfall, a warning that will be raised to orange in Lleida. In general, the Aemet has indicated that the snow level will be located in the north of the Peninsula at about 1,000 meters, so that in the Pyrenees the accumulations can be significant, especially in areas close to the divide.

On the other hand, the wind will put Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, Teruel and Zaragoza on yellow alert, and Lleida, Girona, Tarragona, Huesca and Castellón on orange warning. Likewise, coastal phenomena will have Girona on orange alert and Tarragona, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya, Alicante, Castellón and Valencia on yellow.

Precisely, this Sunday winds will predominate from the north in the western half of the peninsula, and from the northwest in the northeast third and the Balearic Islands, where there may be intervals of strong intensity, while moderate trade winds from the northeast are expected in the Canary Islands.

Already on Monday, the center of the anticyclone will be located in the North Sea, causing a progressive change in direction of the wind, from north to northeast. During the first half of the day there will still be rainfall, although of a weak nature, in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, the Pyrenees and Mallorca; and there will be strong or very strong gusts of wind in the Pyrenees, the Ebro valley and the Balearic Islands.

In the rest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, stable weather is expected, with a rise in daytime temperatures, except in the Mediterranean area where the flow from the northeast will cause a drop. In the Canary Islands, the trade winds remain and temperatures will drop slightly, according to Aemet in its special forecast for Easter.

From Tuesday 3 to Friday 7 April, the stationary anticyclone will remain and low pressures intensify around the Gulf of Cádiz, inducing an easterly wind over the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

On the other hand, an isolated depression at high levels (DANA) will advance from western Portugal to the interior of Africa, passing between the Gulf of Cádiz and the Canary Islands. The weather in general will be stable but the presence of the DANA will favor the probability of precipitation in some areas.

Specifically, on Tuesday and Wednesday rainfall will be likely in the north of the Canary Islands and the Strait area; and, with less probability and more dispersed, they will also be possible in the rest of the Canary Islands, the southern third of the peninsula and the Mediterranean area.

Already on Thursday and Friday, there will be a small probability that they will affect the northern Canary Islands and the Mediterranean regions. Likewise, the temperatures will change little, with values higher than normal on these dates, except in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands where they will be similar to the usual ones. In addition, a strong wind is forecast from the east in the Strait and from the north in the Canary Islands.

For Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th, the Aemet warns of a considerable increase in the uncertainty of the prediction that is associated with the possible approach of a storm in the west of the peninsula. In this way, it advances that an increase in instability is probable, mainly on Sunday, although it clarifies that it is still difficult to specify in which areas and with what probability precipitation is expected.
