Putin, Gaza and Hispanic goodness

Between candor and kindness, Spain does not seem to have realized how screwed our world will be if Putin wins in Ukraine, Hamas (Iran) draws with Israel and Trump is elected (demagogues are sometimes right and no one like them can sell it: the US will disengage from NATO if the European partners fail to comply with the commitment of 2% of GDP for defense, already agreed in 2014, and from which Spain is still far away, it is close to 1.

Between candor and kindness, Spain does not seem to have realized how screwed our world will be if Putin wins in Ukraine, Hamas (Iran) draws with Israel and Trump is elected (demagogues are sometimes right and no one like them can sell it: the US will disengage from NATO if the European partners fail to comply with the commitment of 2% of GDP for defense, already agreed in 2014, and from which Spain is still far away, it is close to 1.3%).

“Nothing we say goes against Israel,” Minister Albares said yesterday at the Munich Conference. Hours before, six ministers, six, demonstrated in Madrid with shouts and demagogic slogans against Israel. Thank goodness, minister, thank goodness...

The elimination of Alexei Navalni, a decent man, invites us to look in the mirror. Beyond the rhetoric – it seems that we Spaniards have the universal heritage of kindness and peace –, the world outlines a disturbing three-way marriage of convenience (Moscow, Beijing and Tehran), united by universal values: crushing the dissident, relegating the individual to the totalitarian interests of the State whose representation is held by single parties and configure a world of silence, fear and submission. Goodbye citizens, all subjects.

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza have been started by some and not by others. The aggressors are the aggressors: Putin and a Hamas controlled by those to whom the fate of the Palestinians is irrelevant. The more who die and suffer, the better for their interests.

The Allies committed atrocities during World War II – crushing German cities, two atomic bombs on Japan – but their victory left a better world than Hitler and his mariachis would have created.

I don't think any Western taxpayer will be enthusiastic about military spending. But it is naive, seen how Putin spends them, to think that people can understand each other through dialogue. Yes, as long as you have cannons behind you. The US has the Pacific in mind and Europe only has NATO. And it is smart – something very Spanish – to think that others, the guiris, will pay for our defense. Cemeteries are full of good words.
