PSOE solidarity and PP attacks: reactions to Pedro Sánchez's announcement

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, published this afternoon a surprising letter to citizens in which he announced that he is canceling his public agenda to reflect on whether or not he will resign as head of the Executive.

According to Sánchez, he made the decision after the complaint against his wife, Begoña Gómez, and will announce his future in a public appearance next Monday, April 29. "I need to stop and reflect," he said, to continue: "I urgently need to answer the question of whether it is worth it."

And in the face of a writing as forceful as it was unexpected, many reactions have come from different political formations: while the members of the PSOE show their support, those of the PP attack.

An example is Minister Teresa Ribera, who has assured that "not everything goes in politics", that "we have a first-class president" and that "neither he nor his family deserve this." Something similar was said by the spokesperson for the Socialist Group in Congress, Patxi López, who stated: "He represents the dignity and courage that is needed in the face of an immoral right that is ready for anything."

Another socialist, in this case the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has also spoken out on the matter: "Some intolerable red lines have been crossed for too long. Not everything goes in politics." And the former Minister of Health and PSC candidate, Salvador Illa, has transferred "all his strength" to him.

This has also been the case of the general secretary of the Party of European Socialists, Giacomo Filibeck, who has urged that these "attacks fueled by hate by the extreme right in Spain" stop. "Democracy must prevail."

On behalf of the PP, deputy Rafael Hernando has stressed that Sánchez's letter "follows the pattern of victimization: everything is a conspiracy of journalist judges and the extreme right. Nothing about influence peddling." Regarding the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, tonight he gives an interview to Onda Cero, so he could speak out.

Another party that has shown its position is Vox, through its vice president of Political Action, Jorge Buxadé, who has ironically commented on Sánchez's message in

The vice president and minister Yolanda Díaz has expressed her support for the leader of the Executive "at a difficult time." "The offensive of the right cannot get its way," she continued. "We must defend democracy, the progressive bloc and the legitimacy of the coalition government that has improved people's lives so much," she concluded.

In parallel, Ione Belarra, general secretary of Podemos and former minister with Sánchez at the head of the Government, has also shown her "solidarity and empathy" with the Spanish president. "At Podemos we know well what lawfare and media persecution mean. We should have stopped them when they harassed the vice president and a government minister in their own home," she wrote on social networks.

In the pro-independence sphere, the general secretary of ERC, Marta Rovira, has also spoken out on the matter. In the first lines she talks about her personal experience, now residing in Geneva, and has concluded: "There is only one way to fight the extreme right: to stand up and not stop."

The former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has also published a message on social networks, who has spoken of an "unusual" decision for a political leader "of his experience." "He usually tends to make tactical moves that no one expects," he continued.

"But if it is not a tactical movement and the reason is really the campaign of the Spanish right," he added, "you can always present a motion of confidence and clarify all the doubts that this unforeseen movement has unleashed."

The Spokesperson for EH Bildu in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, has pointed to the cases in which justice has been instrumentalized to carry out political persecution. "We know well what lawfare is and what objectives those who promote and protect it seek. They will always find us against those who seek to prevent the popular mandate," Aizpurua shared in her account in X of her.
