'Protein', the exhibition of insect-machines as a paradox of the future

The Ses Dotze Naus foundation, in Ibiza, hosts the artistic expressions of the Danes Nina Beier and Simon Dybbroe Moller. This foundation promotes contemporary art on the island throughout the year. A project that was born to promote and develop culture on the island.

This new edition of the foundation's residency program began in April and will culminate with this site-specific exhibition, which can be visited until October 21, 2023. La Carpintería is a new production and exhibition space for Ses12Naus. It is located in the industrial area of Can Bufí, on the outskirts of the city.

The foundation has presented the Protein exhibition in which Nina Beier and Simon Dybbroe Moller have created 500 solar insects and distributed them all over the surface. These animals come to life thanks to the solar panels that have been implanted on their backs and give them energy.

“The presence of these beings in La Carpintería, an impeccable and neat space, awakens an intriguing vision of how contemporary architecture could evolve after a mass extinction, with the insects reclaiming the space originally designed to keep them away,” says Elise Lammer, curator of the exhibition.

The insects are accompanied by framed photographic portraits of real estate agents. “This exhibition reveals how real estate agents are forced to give up certain aspects of their identity, such as their name and personal history, in exchange for the superficial traits associated with the profession,” explains artist Nina Beier.

“This unusual combination defies expectations and raises questions about how different aspects of our society can coexist and intertwine,” says artist Simon Dybbroe Møller.

Protein arises in this context of cultural promotion and raises the paradox around insects, through which artists question us about some of the great questions of our time.

These machine-insects are "paradoxical entities" that exist halfway between an animal and the environment, since manufactured insects contradictorily symbolize both the possibility of a sustainable future and the origin of the mass extinction currently facing The humanity.

The plague that swarms through that immaculate, pristine soil makes us imagine what contemporary architecture would look like hours after our mass extinction. It seems that the insects in the exhibition are trying to recover a space that was originally designed to keep them at bay.

Ses12naus aims to promote and develop contemporary culture in Ibiza. They achieve this by promoting artist residencies, exhibitions and public programs to help make the island a place of creation, production and enjoyment of contemporary art.

“The foundation offers a framework for creation without commercial considerations, prejudices or pre-established constraints. Protein is part of this trajectory that structures the work with which we want to promote initiatives that generate new dialogues between contemporary creation, the cultural and natural heritage of Ibiza and local imaginaries,” declares Ángeles Ferragut, founder and president of Ses12naus.
