For the second consecutive year, Pimec and La Vanguardia organize a training and awareness day on the challenges that SMEs face in terms of cybersecurity. The meeting will be held next Thursday, July 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the ONCE auditorium in Barcelona (Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes, 400) and registration is now open.
The event, sponsored by Banc Sabadell and Telefónica, is part of the Cycle of Meetings on Digitization and Technology, Pymesconnect. It will be attended by prominent leaders of the country's small and medium-sized business sector, as well as representatives of public bodies and experts in information security.
According to a report released last week by global cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky, SMEs remain a key target for cybercriminals. The number of employees encountering malware or unwanted software masquerading as business applications has remained relatively stable year-over-year, but attackers are using increasingly sophisticated methods: phishing, deceptive text messages, and even ostensibly YouTube links. harmless, with the aim of gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data.
According to data from the United Nations, SMEs represent 90% of all companies in the world and contribute to 50% of the world's gross domestic product, so it is increasingly necessary to strengthen their cybersecurity measures. Exploits were the most prevalent threat to these types of organizations, accounting for 63% of all detections during the first five months of 2023. These malicious programs target software vulnerabilities, something that allows cybercriminals to execute malware, elevate their privileges or interrupt critical applications without any user interaction.
Phishing and scams also pose a significant risk, as cybercriminals trick employees into divulging sensitive information or falling victim to financial scams. These techniques include fake financial, delivery, and credit service pages designed to lure unsuspecting employees into their trap. Another frequently used method to infiltrate employees' smartphones is known as 'smishing', a combination of SMS and phishing. This technique consists of the victim receiving a text message with a link, distributed through various instant messaging platforms such as SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger
In the session organized by Pimec and La Vanguardia, the threats that cybercrime poses to SMEs, the attack methods and how to minimize both legal and business continuity risks will be presented in a clear and comprehensible manner, in very short sessions. The keys to incorporate cybersecurity technology in SMEs will also be given, through the aid of the Digital Kit.
The moderator will be Jordi Marín, General Director of ACEC-Consulting Association of Catalonia. The presentations will be given by Raül Roca - Co-Founder and Director of Technology at Grail Cyber Tech; Mónica Espinosa, director of the CIC4Ciber of the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia; Joan Puig, Director of Information Security (CISO) of Grupo Banco Sabadell; and Alexis Hostos, business manager for Cybersecurity and Cloud SMEs at Telefónica Tech.
