Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) was released this Wednesday in compliance with an order from the Constitutional Court, despite the fact that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights asked the authorities of the Andean country to refrain from doing so.
Fujimori left the Barbadillo prison with nasal glasses that provide oxygen, a day after it became known that the TC ordered "the immediate freedom of the favored person" by restoring the effects of the pardon granted to him in 2017 by the then president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. .
At the time of his departure from the penitentiary center, the former president was wearing a mask and, just after passing through the door, he hugged his daughter, Keiko Fujimori, the leader of the Fujimori Popular Force party, and his son Kenji.
He greeted some of those present close to the family, the defense and the party, and entered a gray vehicle with his children and daughter-in-law.
When the former head of state left the last checkpoint of the prison behind, dozens of followers who waited for him throughout the day welcomed him with cheers, music and fireworks.
But the expectation of its release was such that the car was held up for nearly 30 minutes, barely able to move through the nearby streets, surrounded by followers, police and press who surrounded the vehicle.
Local media indicated that the former president is heading towards the home of Keiko Fujimori, in the residential neighborhood of San Borja.
Fujimori's release was delayed for several hours due to a biometric problem in the Barbadillo prison, where former presidents Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) are being held.
The Constitutional Court ordered the immediate release of Fujimori on Tuesday and the resolution, which was signed by three of its current six members, with the deciding vote of the president of the organization, Francisco Morales, declared "the appeal for reconsideration at the end of the direct and immediate execution of the sentence of last March 12, relapsed in the present process."
The Constitutional Court made this decision after a court in the southern region of Ica last Friday declared inadmissible its first resolution that restored the pardon.
However, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights published a resolution this Wednesday requiring the Peruvian State to refrain from releasing the former ruler, in order to guarantee justice for the victims of human rights violations.
The resolution, signed by the president of this court, Ricardo Pérez Manrique, requires Peru not to release Fujimori until the Inter-American Court "has all the necessary elements to analyze whether said decision complies with the conditions established in the Resolution of the Court." In April 2022, the Court ordered Peru to refrain from applying a ruling from the TC that ratified this pardon, as it was contrary to the rulings of the international court in the cases of the La Cantuta and Barrios Altos massacres, for which the former president was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
