Pedro Piqueras reveals why he knows how to speak Catalan

On December 21, 2023, Pedro Piqueras put an end to his professional career after five decades dedicated to the world of communication. The Telecinco Informatives presenter retired from the sets at the age of 68, to make way for his well-deserved retirement. Now, with more free time, the legendary communicator has reappeared in the 3Cat program Col·lapse, and has revealed why he knows how to speak Catalan, something that has left many with their mouths open.

Last December, Pedro Piqueras put an end to his career, but above all to one of the most important stages in his life, that of being a presenter for Informativos Telecinco. After 17 years in the position, which one day was director of Radio Nacional de España, he said goodbye to his audience this Thursday with some emotional words. "Thank you for allowing me to enter your homes," he said.

"I leave with the best memories of having been with you for so many years. I wish you times of less tension, more justice and more happiness. Good night and see you always," expressed the veteran communicator, trying to contain his tears of emotion. "I'm going to miss you all a lot, because my life has been television. I've been embedded in the screen since 1988 and I'm a little scared that next Monday is going to happen without an agenda," he stated for a Telecinco video. a few hours before his last show.

As he himself said then, television has been his life. That is why, after retiring, the presenter has not given up the spotlight one hundred percent, and has recently been interviewed by 3Cat. The presenter demonstrated on the Catalan platform that he knows how to pronounce some words and phrases in Catalan perfectly, and he revealed why in the Col·lapse program.

In a fragment shared by the X platform (formerly Twitter), we see the presenter, Ricard Ullastrell, while he asks Piqueras in Catalan: "¿Cómo es que hablas Catalan?". Es entonces cuando in a perfect Catalan, Piqueras answers: "I don't speak Catalan, I only speak a little, and I learned Catalan in Albacete... it's true", he expressed, assuring that he doesn't speak Catalan, that he only does it un poco and that he learned it in his native land, Albacete.

It was then that the legendary presenter dared to say that it was thanks to his mother, who lived in Barcelona during the Civil War. "For her it was the most important time of her life, she was between 12 and 15 years old, she learned Catalan and when she returned to Albacete and I was born, she taught me Catalan," he revealed, already speaking in Spanish. "She told me 'tanca la porta', 'porta la clau', all in Catalan. I was learning a little Catalan," she explained. "Later I had a girlfriend from Lleida and that was definitive," the communicator stated with a laugh.
