Overnight stays in hotels break records with four stars as the most demanded

Tourism is preparing to close the best summer in its history and, in addition, the data that is becoming known points to a 2023 that will be close to the records of 2023. The data for the first semester of hotel overnight stays demonstrate this. They increased by 13.5%, reaching a historical record, up to 149.76 million. There are 270,000 more nights than in the first six months of 2019, according to figures on the hotel tourism situation released this Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

During June alone, overnight stays in hotel establishments exceeded 36.2 million. Two out of three people who stayed in them were foreign tourists and a third were nationals. On the other hand, the average stay decreased by 1.4% compared to June 2022, standing at 3.2 nights per traveler.

Hotels received an average of 80.5 euros per day for each available room last month. It is the highest number of the series in a month of June. In addition, the average income obtained by the hotels per available room in the month of June reached the highest record, with 80.5 euros. In the same period of 2022 it was 74.2 euros on average.

Regarding the type of hotel, four-star establishments were the most in demand in June, with more than 19 million overnight stays, followed by three-star establishments, with almost 10 million, and five-star establishments, which exceeded 2.2 million.

By category, average turnover was 257.1 euros for five-star hotels, 118.9 euros for four-star hotels, and 90.5 euros for three-star hotels. The income per available room for these same categories is 178.1, 93 and 67.9 euros, respectively. The tourist spot with the highest average daily turnover was Marbella, with 221.5 euros.

Travelers from the United Kingdom continue to be the first market in overnight stays by foreigners in Spanish hotels during the first half of 2022. The Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Valencian Community, their main destinations.
