One in four women earned less than the minimum wage in 2021

Women accumulated one more year the worst salaries. In 2021, the average remuneration of men was 28,388.69 euros, a gain that is reduced in female workers to 23,175.95 euros, according to the annual survey of salary structure published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) this Tuesday.

Another striking fact is that one in four women had an annual salary that year below the minimum interprofessional wage, compared to 10.7% of men. This difference is influenced by the fact that women accumulated a greater number of part-time contracts.

Women workers were also in the majority in 2021 in the low earnings table. In other words, of the wage earners whose hourly wages are below two thirds of the median earnings, 62.7% were women. Once again, the accumulation of part-time jobs played a role. For their part, regarding the highest salaries, five times or more than a minimum wage, 3.9% of men reached that level, compared to 2.2% of women.

The salary structure survey shows that, despite the inequalities that continue to exist in the labor market, the average annual earnings of Spanish workers was 25,896.82 euros in 2021, improving the data of the previous year by 2.9%. Thus, eight upward exercises are chained. According to the INE, this difference between the remuneration of men and women is reduced if similar jobs are considered (same occupation, type of contract, type of working day, etc.). The median salary, for its part, which results from dividing the number of workers into two equal parts, those with a higher salary and those with a lower salary, was 21,638.69 euros in 2021, with an increase of 3 ,4 %.

As for the territories with the best remuneration, the Basque Country stands out with 31,063.68 euros per year per worker in 2021. The Community of Madrid, with 29,512.58 euros, and Navarra, 28,459.37 euros, are next. Catalonia, for its part, achieved an average profit of 28,145.02 euros, almost 1,400 euros below that of the people of Madrid and more than 2,900 euros less than that of the Basques. Extremadura (21,393.01 euros), the Canary Islands (22,466.23 euros) and Andalusia (23,154.99 euros) presented the lowest salaries.

By activities, the one that presented the highest average annual salary in 2021 was the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning, with 52,985.83 euros per worker, a figure that doubles the national average. On the opposite side, hospitality and administrative activities and auxiliary services had the lowest average annual salaries, with 14,632.81 and 18,118.66 euros, respectively.
