Russia launched a new “massive” missile attack early Wednesday morning against electrical infrastructure in six different regions of central, southeastern and western Ukraine, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko reported this Wednesday. It caused “serious damage” to three of the six thermal power plants that the private sector company DTEK has in Ukraine, according to the company itself on its social networks.
“The enemy does not abandon its plans to leave Ukrainians without light. A new massive attack against our energy industry,” Galushchenko said in a statement published by the minister on his social networks. There were apparently no victims. There were more than 50 missiles and 20 drones, Volodymyr Zelensky indicated on Telegram.
According to the source, Russia attacked “electricity generation and transmission infrastructures in the regions of Poltava and Kirovograd (center), Zaporizhia (southeast), Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinitisia (west).” Ukrainian military sources reported in the early hours of Wednesday a new wave of Russian missiles and drones targeting regions across the country, including Kyiv.
All missiles aimed at the Ukrainian capital were destroyed, Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app. He added that there was no major damage or injuries as a result of the attack.
Reuters witnesses in Kyiv reported hearing explosions, which sounded like air defense systems hitting aerial objects. Air defense systems were also involved in repelling the Russian attack on the Lviv region, which borders NATO member Poland, where several explosions occurred, regional officials said.
The attack took place on Remembrance and Reconciliation Day, in memory of the victims of World War II. “The whole world must clearly understand who is who. “The whole world has no right to give Nazism another chance,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
Russia, which began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has launched a series of attacks against Ukrainian power facilities in recent months. Moscow denies attacking civilians but says the Ukrainian energy system is a legitimate military target.
