New vocational training places next year increase by 3,700, with 300 more teachers

In the course in which the new features of the Vocational Training Law, approved in 2022, will be incorporated, with changes to the curricula and an increase in training time in the company, the Government will offer 174,737 places in total, which means an increase of 3,709 compared to the previous year. This is the first year of the last three in which the supply of places does not increase significantly to keep pace with the increase in demand, despite the fact that the demographic curve continues to rise for ages 16 to 18. Pre-registration, which will be unique, will take place from May 24 to 30. The Government has simplified the pre-registration process so that the place will be available in the month of July.

These are some of the data provided today by three Government advisors, Laura Vilagrà, Roger Torrent and Anna Simó at the Palau de la Generalitat who have announced that those training courses that are related to caring for people will carry out a module in Catalan. This is a "historic demand" that plans to address vocabulary and lexicon to improve service to people in Catalan, according to Simó.

The module will not be taught by Catalan teachers, but by technicians who know the vocabulary of that profession. It will be introduced into the administration and management cycles; commerce and marketing; hospitality and tourism, health and sociocultural services.

In the final offer, the intermediate degree cycles have increased by 22 groups, while in higher education the increase has been greater with 36.5 more groups. Likewise, those training courses that try to prevent school dropouts (IFE, PFI and basic grade) have been slightly increased with 27 more groups in Catalonia.

In total, adding the professional certificates and continuing occupational training, 486,199 places will be offered, 7.7% more than the previous year.

The councilors did not clear up the doubts about the unknowns of the next academic year, magnified by the proximity of the elections to the Generalitat, such as the lack of teachers in certain families as well as the lack of companies to host internship students. Neither do integrated centers and professional guidance.

In this regard, Simó explained that the educational FP will have 301 more teachers to meet the needs of certain profiles, but that the dedication of hours of the technical trainers on staff will not increase to make up for the absences (panel workers, installers, mechanics) because it is a formula to which very few professionals in the specialties that have allowed it have joined. Either because they do not want to work overtime, or because the added hours are incompatible with the work day. Likewise, Simó regretted not being able to advance a decree that would increase the profile of teachers in the classrooms (experts, specialists and others) due to the delay of the Ministry of Education and FP in publishing the regulations that develop the FP law.

Regarding the training time in the company, which increases significantly next year, the counselor once again asked companies to join. The employers had requested that the figure of the joint guardian be defined, to better accompany small and medium-sized companies, an issue that the minister has not ruled out.

The total number of places is distributed among the three organizations that manage the FP: the Public Employment Service of Catalonia (SOC) will reach 38,570 places; the Ministry of Education, 174,737 places, and the Consortium for Continuing Education of Catalonia, 272,892 places.

The general budget will be 955.9 million euros, and the offer will be developed in 2,551 centers with 17,011 teachers and experts, will have 2,572 information and orientation points and will have the collaboration of 40,548 companies and entities.

Finally, in the 2024-2025 academic year, four new specialized institutes will be launched in Barcelona: the Vall d'Hebron Health Vocational Training Institute, the Barcelona Guineueta Institute of Safety and Mobility, the Barcelona Institute of Graphic Arts Design and the Barcelona Business Training Institute.
