Mataró promotes the new Domestic Animal Shelter Center

The Mataró City Council (Maresme) is promoting new equipment that will be used as an animal shelter and for the municipal collection service that will have capacity for 70 dogs and up to 80 cats. The project foresees that a second adjacent facility can be built, in this case private, to carry out the animal protection activity.

The closure in mid-2017 of the facilities of the old Domestic Animal Shelter on Galicia Street, which did not meet the optimal conditions for either the workers or the animals housed, meant the transfer of this service to the municipal property of Cal Pilé. However, this location is provisional and it is necessary to build new equipment to comply with the needs and current regulations on animal welfare.

The solution proposed by the City Council involves implementing double equipment on Galícia Street, within the scope of the specific modification of the General Plan in the Cirera road sector. The land, which the City Council has obtained by direct occupation before the reparcelling, is located between the motorway tunnel and the Punt Net. Two adjacent buildings are planned, planned as if it were a single facility but which would function independently: one for the new Pet Shelter Center (CAAC), from which to carry out the municipal service and which the City Council will build, and the other for the activities of the Mataró Animal Protection Society (SPAM), now in the shelter of Cal Pilé and that this entity will have to be built.

Yesterday the Government Board approved the basic and executive project of the CAAC, that is, the equipment where the municipal service would be developed. The budget for the execution of the works is 1,623,277.79 euros (VAT included). The construction is planned in the shape of a comb: it will have a longitudinal axis where there will be the main building that will face Galicia Street and at the same time will act as a pillow for the dog and cat boxes, which will be located on transverse axes towards the interior. of the plot.

Access will be from the main building, which will be light timber framed with a metal sheet exterior finish and a gabled roof. Inside there will be a reception area with a large lobby, information and administration area, and a multipurpose classroom for groups. From the lobby there will also be access to the service area, with a toilet area, dining room and changing rooms. On the north side of the main building there will be a care room equipped to perform interventions, a hospitalization room and a veterinary dispensary. Opposite the clinical area will be the food, cleaning and waste storage area.

A covered outdoor distributor will allow travel through the different pit alignments. These will have a surface area of about eight square meters and will face south, with one part covered by shelter and another uncovered to allow the sun to enter. Each box can accommodate up to 3 dogs maximum and every two compartments there will be a small outdoor patio where the animals can spend most of the day and which will also serve as access. They will have automatic drinkers and food hoppers and a system of tarps will be provided to protect and generate shade areas when necessary.

The cat enclosure will be located on the northwest front. It is a closed area with its own large fenced patio with vegetation. The perimeter fence of the facility will be resolved as an acoustic and plant fence, generating a green pillow to guarantee maximum acoustic and visual protection.

The CAAC project affects a total plot area of 2,175.85 m2 and also the development of external slopes and sidewalks that occupy a combined area of 446.46 m2. Once initially approved by the Governing Board, the project will now be subject to a period of 30 business days of public information and, if no allegations are presented, it will be considered definitively approved. The works will then have to be put out to tender and awarded, which, once started, will have a completion period of 12 months.
