In the last five years, period 2018-2022, Mataró has increased its population by 2,873 new inhabitants, a relative variation of 2.27%. The progressive recovery in recent years of the migratory component (difference between registrations and cancellations) has meant the replacement of the vegetative component (difference between births and deaths) when explaining the demographic growth of the city.
In the last year, only two of the city's eleven neighborhoods have not seen their population increase. Those that have increased it the most are Rocafonda (199), Eixample (179), Cerdanyola (150) and Pla d'en Boet (129), while La Llàntia (-25) and Peramàs (-4) have decreased it. The most significant relative variations are those of Pla d'en Boet (2.24%), Rocafonda (1.74%) and Centro (1.10%).
In 2022, 7,232 registrations have been registered, 766 more than in 2021, which represents a relative variation of 11.85%. In the period 2018-2022, 33,164 have been registered, 5,598 more than during the previous five-year period, period 2013-2017, with a percentage variation of 20.31%. The discharge rate for the last five years stands at 51.48‰, 6.97 points per thousand above that registered during the period 2013-2017. In the period 2018-2022, the number of discharges from other municipalities in Catalonia, the rest of the state and other countries is 16,802, 3,644 and 9,580, respectively.
In the last year, Mataró registered a positive migration balance of 980 inhabitants. By age groups, the main positive balances are observed in the age groups of youth and young adults: 25-29 years (248), 20-24 years (205) and 15-19 years (130). In the same period, only those aged 50-54 years (-6), 60-64 years (-5) and those aged 80 and over (-39) registered slightly negative balances. In the period 2018-2022, the city's migration balance is positive at 3,072 inhabitants.
As of January 1, 2022, the population of foreign nationality totals 22,042 inhabitants and represents 16.97% of the total population. Compared to a year ago, it has increased by 677 inhabitants, which represents a relative variation of 3.17%. In the last year, the three nationalities that have increased their number the most among the most numerous in Mataró are Colombia (206).
