The sociologist Manuel Castells has been elected a full academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences of the United States. A collaborator of La Vanguardia for more than two decades with its Global Observatory section, Castells (Hellín, 1942) thus receives the highest distinction in the United States academic world.

Holder of the Wallis Annenberg Professorship of Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, and Honoris Causa by countless universities, Castells is in possession, among other distinctions, of the Holberg Prize, considered the Nobel Prize in the Social Sciences.
