Magdalena Valerio, new president of the Council of State

Magdalena Valerio will replace María Teresa Fernández de la Vega in the presidency of the Council of State after the former vice president of the Government in the Executive of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero resigned from the position on Thursday.

According to El Diario, the election of Valerio -former Minister of Labor from 2018 to 2020-, is official, although the appointment will not take place until it passes through the Constitutional Commission of the Congress of Deputies in a process that is not binding.

Before accessing the first Government of Pedro Sánchez, Valerio held various positions in the local and regional administration of Castilla La Mancha. She is currently a deputy for Guadalajara and since February 2020 she chairs the monitoring commission for the Agreements of the Toledo Pact.

The dismissal of the former Vice President of the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will be effective from next Tuesday, October 18, since it has to be approved by the Council of Ministers.

The resignation came after fulfilling the commitment made by De la Vega with Pedro Sánchez to spend four years at the head of the Council of State and to undertake a series of reforms such as the digitization and transparency of the institution.
