Madrid once again grows more than Catalonia

Madrid grew more than Catalonia in 2022, increasing the gap between the two autonomies. The increase in GDP was 7.2% in the Madrid community while it was 6.0% in the Catalan community. The Spanish average was 5.8%.

With these advances, Madrid is the territory that weighs the most in the entire Spanish economy (19.44%) while Catalonia remains at 18.95%. In both cases there is a slight decline compared to the data recorded in 2021: 19.49% compared to 19.01%.

On the other hand, Catalonia recovered some ground in terms of GDP per capita where it increased one tenth more: 8.7% compared to 8.6% in Madrid. However, the Madrid community continues to be by far the one with the highest GDP per inhabitant: 38,435 euros. They are followed by the two regional communities: Basque Country (35,832 euros) and Navarra (33,798 euros). Catalonia is next with 32,550 euros.

The 2022 data maintain the path that began in 2017, coinciding with the referendum crisis when Madrid bypassed Catalonia and positioned itself as the community that contributes the most to Spain's GDP. Only in 2021 was the growth of the Catalan community higher than that of the Spanish community because the drop during the previous year (2020) due to covid had also been higher.

With data from 2021 (a year before 2022 for the rest of the statistics), households in the Basque Country were the ones with the highest disposable income per inhabitant, with 20,865 euros. This figure was 26.6% higher than the national average. Behind were Comunidad de Madrid (20,357 euros per capita) and Navarra (18,625 euros). Catalonia was next with 18,369 euros, 11.5% above the Spanish average.
