Karol G sweeps the Latin AMAs, with Rosalía and Shakira among the winners

The singer Karol G became the most awarded artist of the Latin American Music Awards 2023 (Latin AMAs), in a ceremony that shone for its tributes. The 32-year-old Colombian received eight awards, including best artist, tour of the year, best pop song, and best urban artist, among others. Despite being the great protagonist of the night, the interpreter of "Tusa" was conspicuous by her absence, letting Becky G, the second most recognized, receive the applause of her colleagues and the public who attended the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas ( Snowfall).

The Mexican-American interpreter received four distinctions, of which she shared three with Karol G for their collaboration "MAMIII", which was chosen as the song of the year, the collaboration of the year and the best urban collaboration. "I don't know how many awards 'MAMIII' has won, but each one means something stronger than us. Women always in power! Together we are more!" Becky G assured from the stage.

Bad Bunny was the great promise of the night as he was the most nominated artist, but the reggaeton singer only managed to take home the awards for best album of the year, best urban album and best urban song, all derived from his latest record material, "Un summer without you".

The Spanish Rosalía was crowned with the distinctions for best pop album for her album Motomami and for the crossover collaboration of the year for the song La Fama, together with the Canadian The Weeknd. The Colombian Shakira, the Puerto Rican Romeo Santos, The Weeknd himself and the Mexican Junior H were other featured artists, as they won two awards each during the Latin celebration, while the Argentine producer Bizarrap was named the new artist of the year.

The ceremony got off to a strong start once Pitbull, Vikina, and Omar Courtz hit the stage to perform "Me puebla mal," and the event quickly turned romantic with an appearance by newlyweds Lele Pons and Guaynaa. The party continued with performances by reggaeton legends such as Wisin and "La Abeja Reina", Chiquis Rivera.

But, without a doubt, some of the most anticipated moments of the night were the presentations of Becky G with the musical phenomenon Featherweight and the song "Chanel", the interpretation of "No se va" by Grupo Frontera, or the act of Bad Gyal with "Pimp".

The gala was characterized by the tributes paid to Pepe Aguilar, Carlos Vives, David Bisbal and Prince Royce, who had the opportunity to sing their most iconic songs with their fellow members of the guild. "30 years ago music showed me two paths: copy the successful genres of the moment or transform the music of my land and feel proud to be Colombian," said Vives upon receiving the Legend award.

The same award was received by Aguilar from his daughter Ángela, who welcomed the singer on stage with compliments, being one of the most emotional moments of the night. "It's something that I don't feel I deserve because the only thing I've done is follow my heart and my passion," said the interpreter.

Upon receiving the Pioneer distinction, Bisbal highlighted the great inspiration that Latino singers such as Ricky Martin and Chayanne had been in his career. "When I had the opportunity to record my first album, it occurred to me to merge it with the roots of Almería, Andalusia and Spain, and to date I have not stopped doing it," he said proudly.

The ceremony also included performances by Anuel AA, Emilia, Carin León, Manuel Turizo, Natti Natasha, Justin Quiles, Myke Towers and Ángela Aguilar, among others.

This is the first time that the Latin AMAs have been broadcast on the Univisión television network, after seven years of being broadcast by Telemundo, and it is the second edition that has been broadcast from Las Vegas.
