The writer Juan Muñoz, author of works such as Fray Perico and his donkey and El pirata Garrapata, has died this Monday at the age of 93, as announced by his relatives through his official Twitter account.
"Dear readers and students of Juan Muñoz, we sadly announce his death. His books will always make us remember the best moments of our childhood, laughing with his crazy stories. We hope that new readers discover him," this account pointed out.
In addition, they accompany the text with a recent photograph of the author, assuring that they remind him "so happy". Juan Muñoz was born on May 13, 1929 in Atocha, Madrid. He was a teacher and founded several schools together with two of his brothers, Pepe and Luis.
In 1966 he won the Doncel prize for his short story Las tres piedras. At the time when he was teaching at a school on Toledo street, an inspector gave him the book Las florecillas de San Francisco, which would become the germ of his most important work, Fray Perico y su donrico, with which he won the SM El Barco de Vapor Award in 1980.
Fray Perico has sold more than a million and a half books, has been translated into many languages and is even used in Japan to teach Spanish.
In 1982, another of his most important books, El pirata Garrapata, saw the light. Over the years, Juan Muñoz turned his two characters into protagonists of two sagas that have become the two best-selling titles in SM's El Barco de Vapor collection. There have been 71 editions of Fray Perico and his donkey and 64 editions of El pirata Garrapata.
