Jonás Trueba will present 'Volverás' at the Filmmakers' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival

Jonás Trueba (Madrid, 1981) will attend the Cannes Festival to present his new film, Volveráis, in the Filmmakers' Fortnight. Written by Trueba himself and his two favorite actors, Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz, who also star in the film, it is the only presence of Spanish cinema in the prestigious French competition, which will be held from the 14th to the 25th of May. The film tells how after 15 years together, Ale and Alex organize a party to celebrate their breakup. An announcement that leaves your loved ones perplexed.

It is the first time that Jonás Trueba participates in the Croisette. "I think my previous films always had some humor, but with 'Volverás' I wanted to make a more overt comedy. The premise revolves around a somewhat paradoxical idea of a couple who decides to celebrate their breakup. It was also an excuse to reunite Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz as the leading couple, and to repeat with the usual dreamy team, technicians and actors with whom I have been working since my first film. Feeling that we are growing old together is exciting. And presenting our work in it. The Cannes Directors' Fortnight is a joy, because it is a place that has always supported independent cinema and values that are important to us," declared the Madrid filmmaker.

In the last two years, Spanish independent cinema has had a place in this parallel and non-competitive section of the French festival: Elena López Riera was with El agua in 2022, and Elena Martín with Creatura last year, where she won the award for best European film. Elástica films is scheduled to premiere in theaters on August 30.

Son of the Oscar-winning Fernando Trueba, Jonás is the author of the films All the Songs Speak of Me (2010), nominated for the Goya for Best New Director; Miniatures (2011); Los ilusos (2013), award for best director and best film at the Cinespaña Festival in Toulouse; The romantic exiles (2015), special jury prize at the Malaga Festival; La reconquista (2016), for which he won the 2016 Ojo Crítico de Cine Award and the award for best direction and best film at the Cinespaña Festival in Toulouse; The Virgin of August (2019), nominated for the César in the category of best foreign film and the Fipresci Award from International Critics at the Karlovy Vary International Festival; Who Prevents It (2021) Goya Award for Best Documentary Film 2022 and Fipresci International Critics Award at the San Sebastián Festival; and You Have to Come See It (2022), special jury prize at the Karlovy Vary International Festival and best director at the Cinespaña Festival in Toulouse.

He is the founder, together with Javier Lafuente, of Los Ilusos Films, a production company with which he has made all his films and with which they have recently produced The Girls Are Fine (2023), the directorial debut of Itsaso Arana.
