Izquierda Unida has finally accepted the 4th and 6th positions that Sumar has offered it to occupy for its candidacy in the European elections, but at the same time it has decided to suspend its participation in the direction of the organization as a sign of the discomfort that Yolanda Díaz has prioritized. to the commons and Compromís, offering them, respectively, the second and third places.
IU had already sent warning signals in recent weeks, but the meager results obtained by the confederal space in the recent Basque elections - obtaining a single seat - have been the trigger for this first warning shot, complaining about the "inability of the coalition by Yolanda Díaz to bring the space together".
Fourth place "is not the position that IU deserves," the organization comments, but "the working class and the future of the transformative left do not deserve more division and demoralization in the current moment of reactionary advance throughout Europe," sources point out. of the executive. The feeling, however, is that, as soon as the hectic electoral calendar of this semester is completed - Galician, Basque, Catalan and European elections - the fine print of the pact signed so far will be reviewed.
In that sense, the formation has explained that the relationship with Sumar will be a central debate "in the exercise of collective reflection during the assembly process of Izquierda Unida", to recover "the maximum presence in all areas, including the institutional one." But while this debate is taking place, Izquierda Unida will not participate in the bodies of the Sumar Party until the celebration and decision adopted by its Federal Assembly.
It is worth remembering that the candidate for lehendakari, Alba García, Sumar's bet, has not been able to obtain the seat she aspired to for Bizkaia with the leader of the PCE in Euskadi, Jon Hernández, the only representative of the space in the Basque Parliament.
From Sumar they emphasize that IU's position has to do with its internal issues, in reference to the holding of its assembly to elect leaders and the perspective of confrontation of lists between the Minister of Youth, Sira Rego, the former leader of the Andalusian federation Antonio Maíllo and the representative of the critical sector José Antonio García Rubio.
Thus, they understand that it is necessary to leave space for IU until its congressional event is held, given that its internal tensions are transferred to the relationship with Sumar with the logical pressures to try to preserve its weight within the confluence.
In this regard, and given that Catalonia is the next season on the electoral calendar, the leader of the commons and co-spokesperson for Sumar in Congress, Aina Vidal, has expressed her respect for IU's decision although she has stressed that the important thing is that they go together to the next European elections.
"Once again we are all going to go together. The organic decisions made by the different parties within Sumar are legitimate, but what is important here are the European elections," stressed the deputy spokesperson for the plurinational group during a press conference at the Congress.
Vidal has admitted that the preparation of the electoral lists "is not exactly the kindest moment" for any party and has tried to do "pedagogy" so that it is understood that beyond the "desirable motto" of unity, behind a confluence wide range of training there is a "very complex goldsmith's work" to accommodate all sensitivities.
