Interior alerts about the danger of cyber-scams of QR codes, widely used in restaurants

The Ministry of the Interior is broadcasting from this Wednesday short videos adapted to the platforms of Twitter, Instagram and TikTok to inform about two of the most common scams on the network: that of QR codes and that of the techniques known as 'skimming' and 'carding'.

The first of the videos released refers to the fraud of QR codes, a tool fully incorporated by citizens that gained popularity during the pandemic, when this technology replaced paper to be able to consult menus in restaurants.

As explained by the Ministry of the Interior, cybercriminals take advantage of its widespread implementation to replace real restaurant codes with false ones that redirect the user to a false payment gateway.

The Civil Guard advises consulting directly with the establishment if the user scans a restaurant code for payment that redirects him to a suspicious website.

Regarding skimming and carding, frauds that act directly on the credit card, the Ministry of the Interior also recommends keeping alert.

The first of them, skimming, uses the physical copying of the bank card by installing camouflaged devices in ATMs or bank terminals in order to obtain the content of the magnetic strip to proceed with its cloning. To avoid these forms of fraud, the National Police recommends paying attention to the structure of ATMs and checking that the keyboard or the space reserved for the card have not been tampered with.

Carding, on the other hand, consists of acquiring bank card data for fraudulent use through different techniques, such as sending links, using false web pages, notifications from supposed telephone companies, etc. To avoid this, the Ministry of the Interior recommends that, when making a payment online, we make sure that payments are made on platforms that allow bank authorization and the full bank card number should never be provided over the phone.
