In the Italian town of Ivrea they say goodbye to the carnival with oranges

Beyond the costumes, the carnival also provides very unique customs and traditions in many places around the world. Among them, for example, in Italy, where the famous “Battle of the Oranges” takes place. This is a peculiar way they have in the town of Ivrea to say goodbye to the costume festival.

For three days, tons and more tons of oranges are dumped in the historic center of this Italian municipality. The objective of the throwers is to reach the individuals who are on top of a float, which is why they cover their heads with helmets.

The festival dates back to the 12th century, where citizens tried to overthrow a tyrannical feudal lord of the 12th century, called Rainieri of Biandrate, using oranges. In Spain, this battle inevitably reminds us of the famous “tomatina”. Of course, with a somewhat softer impact.
