How does drought affect the color of trees?

I would like to talk to you in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos about these photographs that I took in Sant Celoni, in the Vallès Oriental, with my mobile phone.

During these last weeks and perhaps months, I have been realizing that some trees did not have that green that characterizes them. For example, many pine trees are a duller green than usual.

And one of the reasons for these more "faded" colors is due to an intense and prolonged drought over time. In the case of Sant Celoni, according to data from the town's meteorological station, only 11 liters of rain have been recorded this October.

But it has not only been the drought, but we also have to add other factors such as the highest temperatures we have had.

Due to these adverse conditions for these trees, some pine trees end up changing their colors to more yellowish and ending up gray when they die.

This event should not happen as frequently as we may see this fall. Luckily, not all the pine trees in the Baix Montseny area are dead or in very critical condition, although, if it does not rain continuously and forcefully, the situation could worsen.

It must also be remembered that a moderately long time must pass for a pine tree to recover from the drought it suffers and regain its usual greenness.

Let's hope that this situation improves soon and we can enjoy living, green forests with fully autumnal colors.
