Historical minimum in the Catalan swamps

In La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos we can see how swamps like Baells and Sau are emptier every day, waiting for it to rain. And if it doesn't rain soon, a good part of Catalonia will enter an emergency due to extreme drought and there will be more restrictions and in more municipalities.

The situation is more than worrying after 36 months without significant rain. So much so that the reserves of the reservoirs of the internal basins - those that irrigate the eastern half of the country - are at a new historical minimum, 18.89%, exceeding the previous minimum, 18.9%, recorded in 1989.

The state of the reservoirs in the internal basins is deplorable. Darnius is at 14.5% capacity; Sau, whose current images we can see in these photographs, is at 16.8%; Susqueda, at 18%. Among the most full is Baells, at 24.9%, which we can also see in this report, and Sant Ponç, at 26.9%.

The reserves of the Ebro basins are at 34.59% of their capacity. Although it is a slight improvement compared to a month ago, it is also worrying. Although the Oliana reservoir is close to 39% of its capacity, the Rialb reservoir is at 19.28% and the Guiamets reservoir is only at 7.37%.

The emergency scenario is activated when the reservoir reserves are below 16%, but, given this current situation, it cannot be ruled out that a large part of Catalonia will now enter the emergency phase due to extreme drought.
