High abstention in Italy: Participation remains at 64%, 10 points less than in 2018

Pending the scrutiny and the final data, the Ministry of the Interior reports on its website a participation of 63.98%. The figure represents a clear decrease compared to the 2018 elections, in which it exceeded 73.83%.

The polls had already predicted the possibility of a record abstention being recorded, and the partial data at 7:00 p.m. had brought it forward. At 11:00 p.m., the Ministry of the Interior confirms it.

The difference in participation between regions, however, is enormous. In northern regions such as Lombardy, Veneto or Emilia-Romagna, participation has exceeded 70%; however, in the south, in regions such as Campania or Calabria, it has remained at 54% and 50%, respectively.

In any case, in all regions there has been a drop in participation. The largest of all has been recorded in Molise, in the southern half, and the smallest in Lombardy.

According to the first analyses, the influx decreases throughout the country, but especially in the south, where in cities like Naples it fell by up to 10 points.

For some analysts, the decline in the number of voters in the south also reflects a departure from politics, while the result could also be conditioned by bad weather and heavy rains that have affected that area of the country throughout the day. , especially in Campania.

The Italians preferred to vote in the early hours of the morning since the influx was 19.21%, similar to the 19.43% of the 2018 elections, while later at 7:00 p.m. it was 51.16% (it had been from 58.40% in the last general elections).
